In 1802 the remains of a young woman were found in a catacomb of Saint Priscilla on the Via Salaria. It was covered with stones, the symbols on which indicated that the body was a martyr named Saint Philomena. She is the only saint to have revealed her story in what you can call “Private revelation” Saint Philomena revealed her story to three different people, in different parts of the world. These three people didn’t know each other as well! Philomena is believed to be born in Corfu, a small island in ancient Greece, towards the end of 3rd century. Mother Euphrasia was born on 17th October 1877, in a village called Kattoor in Kerala. Her father, Eluvathingal Cherpukaran Anthony was a well known businessman, and Her mother Kunjethy was a virtuous woman. On the eighth day of her birth, she was named Rosa, after her paternal grandmother. At the age of nine, Rosa is said to have experienced an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which led her to make a commitment never to marry, and to commit her entire life to God. When she was ten, she entered the boarding school attached to the first indigenous Carmelite community in the Syro-Malabar Church, founded by Saints Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Leopold Beccaro in 1866 at Koonammavu in Ernakulam District. As she grew older, Rosa wanted to enter the Sisters of the Mother of Carmel, who follow the Rule of the Third Order of the Discalced Carmelites. Her father opposed this, as he wanted to arrange a marriage for her with the son of another prosperous family in the region.
